LUFC Men's Firsts, Champions of the League! - Victory for the Men's Seconds
As of their victory on Wednesday the LUFC men's Firsts have now won the BUCS Northern 2a League! This has been a fantastic season for the firsts having not lost a single match this season and expect to continue performing strongly. The team travelled to Manchester to play against the University of Manchester Men's 2nds winning 123-108. The team captain Liam Melvein had this to say on the result:
For the first time in many years Liverpool University Mens First have won their league with an impressive game in hand victory. This has been down to each and every member of thats squads continued hard work and dedication to training and fitness both inside and outside of training. As captain I can say that not only am I proud of my squad but also honoured to have had their support and respect...well mostly respect lol. We are now looking at a very real promotion prospect, BUCS pending, and it would finally be amazing to get this team into a league more befitting of its talents. Thank you guys
Liam Melvein, Men's Team Captain
On the same day the Men's Seconds team won their first match this year seeing a victory of 108-123 with the debut appearances of Thaddeus Thorp and Aaron Teager fencing in foil and sabre respectively. Both performed fantastically for the team helping to secure victory and man of the match was handed to Thaddeus Thorp as a result. The captain of the team Emyr Humphreys said:
The whole team's worked hard and improved a lot since last semester, and it's so satisfying to finally see the results in the form of our first win as a fully fledged team. We've still got our toughest challenge yet this Wednesday away to Manchester and a cup match at home once again against UCLAN the week after, so while it's not time to let up just yet, we have every reason to be happy and confident with our progress so far.
Emyr Humphreys, Men's Seconds Captain
And Liam also commented that:
Never has it been in all my time at this club, for the past 2 and a half years, or in fact club memory that we have had such a strong and committed seconds team befitting of its title of 'University of Liverpool Mens'. This team will always have a special place in my heart as the team I played for in my first year and the team that propelled me to where I am today. The seconds team has finally become what I wished it had been in my first year, a team proud of its members and achievements, and I sincerely hope this continues. This has been down to the continued efforts of its primary captain, Emyr, and its members all of whom have shown first class standard in regards to attitude to training, self improvement and beyond. We have now created a team of members developing at a rate beyond anything which has been seen before with members approaching that well earned 1st team position. I hope that all members of the seconds team both past, present and those to the future whether you move to firsts or not retain that pride for the seconds team and all of its members. Your success against UCLAN is the first of its kind, a complete victory with solely 2nds team players, is a remarkable achievement and each and every member regardless of who played and didnt should hold that in their hearts.
Liam Melvein, Men's Team Captain
Its always great to have support on match days so if you have a some time free this Wednesday from 2:00 you could pop down to the sports centre and see some of the matches. The Men's 1sts will be playing UCLAN while the Men's 2nds are away against Manchester and the Women's 2nds will be fencing Lancaster university in the dance studio. If you can pop down and show your support it would definitely be appreciated.
